In the words of Rawls (2002: 6): Ethnomethodologists generally use methods that require immersion in the situation being studied. They hold it as an ideal that they learn to be competent practitioners of whatever social phenomena they are studying. The ideal is referred by Garfinkel as ‘unique adequacy’. The emphasis upon immersion is necessitated by the aim of ethnomethodology, that is, to explicate the methods used to produce ‘from within’ a given activity. In other words, what the ethnomethodological sociologist is seeking to explicate is the practitioners’ knowledge and competence involved in accomplishing the activity under investigation.
Our incumbency of these membership categories fluctuates; our current interactional circumstances make relevant some category memberships and not others. In general terms, the significance of these membership categories, on one level, is that they provide a means for us to make sense of the social world. It is in terms of such categories, at least in part, that our knowledge of the social world is organized. Such categories, as Sacks (1992a) points out, are ‘inference rich’. This means that when we know what category applies to a person, then we know something about them.
Not only then are the operative categories to which we may belong and in terms of which we act enormously varied, they are also ‘situational’ or ‘local’ in character. By this we mean that we can only discover what categories persons are demonstrably oriented to by inspecting the detail of the talk and action that they are engaged in at a particular interactional moment. From this point of view, depending on the activity that a person may currently be engaged in, a person’s membership category may be telephone caller, current speaker, complainant, advice seeker, sulker, litterer or dog walker and so forth.
