In pursuing its S&T investments in such components, ONR needs to make sure that (1) a strong U.S. learn strength to paintings on long term S&T difficulties in parts of curiosity to the dept of the army and the dept of safeguard is continued, (2) an sufficient provide of recent scientists and engineers in those components is maintained, and (3) S&T items and strategies essential to make certain destiny superiority in naval war are supplied. one of many severe parts for the dep. of the military is undersea weapons.

An review of Undersea guns technology and Technology assesses the health and wellbeing of the prevailing military application in undersea guns, evaluates the Navy's examine attempt to strengthen the functions wanted for destiny undersea guns, identifies non-Navy-sponsored learn and improvement efforts that would facilitate the improvement of such complex guns functions, and makes ideas to concentration the Navy's learn software in order that it might probably meet destiny needs.

TECHNOLOGY ISSUES Maturity of the Key Technology Areas and Associated Challenges As presented to the committee, the ONR undersea weapons S&T program is largely devoted to developing incremental improvements that can be inserted into either or both the MK-48 and MK-50 torpedoes. In the case of the MK 50, the plan is to retrofit with MK-46 open-cycle engines and replace the directed-energy warhead with a bulk charge. The MK 50 has a SCEPS engine that will be replaced with an MK-46 engine in the MK 54.

SUMMARY OF ASSESSMENT Based on the preceding discussion, the committee offers the following summary assessment of the ONR undersea weapons S&T program: • Torpedo upgrades are mature. • Interactions with related technology areas need strengthening. • Program funding is not sufficient to offset the evolving S&T available to potential enemies. 1) is much too small. • Because they must function in a challenging undersea environment, undersea weapons involve special technologies, adaptations of other technologies, and unique integration of all these technologies.

In addition, the weapon and high-frequency submarine sonar outputs could be processed coherently to enhance passive detection and to perform target localization by estimating the Doppler components and the time difference of arrival. Weapon-Weapon Connectivity The high-bandwidth connectivity between weapon and platform enables another important opportunity. The platform can now act as a node to connect two weapons in the water. The spectral response (or beam aspect, for a monostatic system) of the target gives the best opportunity for detection.
